About the Ghana Journey

This is a call  to return to Alkebulan and reconnect with the roots that bind us all. Let this be the year you answer the invitation and choose our team to host your reconnection and renewal.  Five principles will guide our experiences: Reciprocity, Relationships, Respect, Reflection, and Re-commitment. These are at the heart of Motherland International Relations work. Our journey through Ghana is designed to connect you with the history, culture, and vibrant spirit of one of the world’s most peaceful countries. This itinerary will blend historical insights with meaningful engagements.

Ghana, a site of peace and democracy on the African continent, is an open door to enter into the Motherland.   The spirit of Akwaaba (Welcome) pervades society, and there are wonderful people, places, and heritage to join with.  The Pan-African tradition that overturned the colonized Gold Coast in 1957 through the Positive Action Movement is relevant today as the country struggles with its economic, social, religious, cultural, and environmental challenges.   Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana,  envisioned freeing and uniting Africa from colonial and postcolonial chains; this work is ongoing.  Our orientation and in-country engagement collaborators, including his daughter Madam Samia Nkrumah, will highlight the strengths of on-the-ground activism alive in local communities, showcasing how these movements are still fighting for a just and a progressive Ghana.

Our engagement will focus on a variety of areas including African solutions to global problems including agriculture, Anti-GMO campaigns, progressive politics, and connecting with Diaspora organizations.

The dungeons/castles along the coast, solemn reminders of the transatlantic slave trade/raid, stand as proof of a shared horrific history.  These dungeon walls, echoing with the stories of ancestors, offer a place for reflection and rage, a sacred ground for understanding and healing.

The markets full of bustling people, colors, and scents,  offer textures and flavors of Africa. The artistry, from intricate Kente cloth to bold Afrocentric paintings, is a conversation between ancestors and the generations of today.

Imagine the warm embrace of the sun as it rises over the vibrant landscapes.. Open your senses to be enlivened with sounds of the city, tastes of fresh fruit and staple dishes, smells of the salty ocean, and the feeling of shaking hands Ghanaian style with each new introduction.  In rural and urban areas tradition and modernity dance together crafting a culture rich in music, art, and technology.

The Group & Pre-Trip Orientations

Our groups are generally between five and twelve participants,  accompanied by two of the MIR staff, the driver for our air-conditioned bus, and many in-country engagement collaborators.

We will provide three two-hour virtual orientations starting three months before the trip. These sessions, besides logistics, will immerse us in the study of Ghana—its history, culture, current events, language, and food—through readings, films, and group activities.  This is also a time for participants to familiarize each other with our reasons, intentions, and questions about the upcoming trip.  As a group, we will practice deep listening and sharing as we learn from each person’s experiences and perspectives.

This is not just a tourist visit to another country but a deep dive into reciprocal learning and shared growth; a Rite of Passage. It's an opportunity to forge lasting relationships, to respect and reflect upon our shared histories, and to recommit to our collective future.  Upon the return to the U.S.A. there will be two debriefing sessions and planning for presentations for your local networks.

We invite you to be part of this collaborative effort, to learn and help shape this bridge of understanding and unity between the Diaspora and Ghana creating pathways of change and networks of exchange.
